Willow-leaved pear is a small, oval-rounded, ornamental pear tree which typically reaches only 10-15' tall and features silvery, weeping foliage. Foliage emerges silver in spring but gradually turns silvery green as the growing season progresses. Weeping form provides excellent winter interest. Pink-tipped buds open to creamy white flowers in dense corymbs in early spring. Flowers are followed by small, greenish-yellow pears (to 1.5" long) which are of little ornamental significance or practical value. This cultivar is very similar to P. salicifolia 'Pendula' and may in fact be identical. Click the image to read more!
This is one of the most beautiful small trees for the ornamental landscape. It is perfectly suited as a specimen tree, an accent in a mixed border, or in a container on the patio. It anchors the Japanese style garden. Many of the cultivars remain quite small and are especially useful in small gardens, even rock gardens, and for bonsai. A small to medium sized variegated maple; it is the red-tinged form of Shigitatsu Sawa. As the bud first opens the inner bud scales and new leaves are maroon. When fully opened the typical color of the leaves is variegated yellow with pink to red highlights. The leaves are reticulated, however, the veins are not prominently displayed in the new growth. The striking feature of this cultivar is the ever changing colors from spring through summer to autumn. Each tree seems to have its own particular variegation depending upon the amount and type of sunlight. Summer heat creates a dark maroon color for the new growth with existing leaves turning to various shades of green. Trees that are grown in more shade will display new growth with lavender highlights. Recommended sun exposure is in the morning with some shade protection in the hot afternoon sun. Estimated height in 10 years is 8' with a width of the same size. A true kaleidoscope of color for maple lovers. Prefers morning sun and afternoon shade. Click the image to read more!
Persian ironwood is a small deciduous tree that grows 15-30 ft (4.6-9.1 m) in height. It is grown for its distinctive spreading habit, its brilliant autumn foliage display, its showy exfoliating bark and its curious late winter ruby red flowers. Cultivated specimens usually have a single, relatively short trunk which forks near the ground, and a rounded crown composed of wide spreading, horizontal, arching, or even drooping branches. Older specimens develop a crossing and overlapping pattern of branches and may have crown spreads greater than their heights. (Wild Persian ironwoods in their native forest habitat have upright, ascending branches.) The leaves of Persian ironwood look much like those of the related American tree, witchhazel (Hamamelis virginiana) - they are alternate, coarsely wavy edge toothed above the middle and 3-5 in (7.6-12.7 cm) long. The lustrous dark green leaves turn bright yellow, orange and purplish red in the fall. Persian ironwood is attractive when not in leaf, too: the smooth bark on the trunk and larger branches peels and flakes, creating a mottled patchwork of green, beige, white and gray blotches. The flowers are a showy curiosity. They have no petals; what you see are spiderlike clusters of ruby red stamens borne along the naked branches in late winter, before the leaves emerge. Several cultivars are available. 'Pendula' gets only 5 ft (1.5 m) tall and 10 ft (3.1 m) wide with spreading branches that droop at the ends. Click the image to read more!
A very attractive shrub clipped into a great looking half standard form. Another excellent topiary for the patio or doorway. An evergreen shrub growing to about 10 feet. It is hardy in the milder areas Britain and Ireland. It is in leaf all year and in flower in June. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil. A very tolerant and easily grown plant, it succeeds in any soil that is not impoverished or water-logged. Makes a very good medium-sized hedge in the milder areas of the country. Lemon bottlebrush is a small tree or large shrub that gets 6-12 ft (2-4 m) tall and 6-9 ft (2-3 m) wide. The leaves are narrow, lance shaped, and leathery, with a distinctly citrus aroma (thus the common name). The bright red, plump, bottle-brush shaped flowers are composed mostly of stamens. They bloom off and on throughout hot weather. The bark is somewhat rough and light brown. Other less hardy forms of bottlebrush are available, including C. viminalis (weeping bottlebrush) and C. speciosus (showy bottlebrush). Callistemon rigidus is about equally hardy to cold with smaller flowers. Click the image to read more!
This is a dwarf ornamental bamboo which grows to a maximum of 3ft. It has a beautiful array of gleaming yellow leaves, striped with green, for nine months of the year (summer, autumn, winter). It is very good to use in the foreground of a planting arrangement. It forms dense clumps but will turn a subtle lime-green if grown in light shade. Canes have a purple flush to them and can be cut to the ground in autumn or spring to encourage the new yellow growth. This beautiful variegated bamboo is also brilliant in a dull border, a container or as groundcover. Click the image to read more!
Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' is perhaps the most extreme of the variegated Japanese maples. The leaves are sometimes nearly all-white, with merest flecks of green. Sometimes the leaves have much more green with extravagant white markings with (especially in early spring) pink tips & highlights. An extremely young sapling is usually greenleafed without much variegation, but soon after its third year it will become variegated with a vengeance. The ten year height of this small tree can be usually a few feet, though it might in the very long run reach fifteen feet. It can be multi-trunked & rather wide-limbed, hence more of a shrub than a tree, although this depends greatly on how it is trained, since a young developing specimen can be trained with as many or as few trunks as the gardener decides.
