Delicately scented, silvery-white autumn flowers and lustrous, dark green leaves with a bold, dark yellow central mark. This easy-to-grow, evergreen shrub is perfect for lifting sombre areas of the border or for growing as an informal hedge in an exposed, coastal site. The handsome, variegated foliage, excellent for flower-arranging, is best in full sun. Silverthorn is a huge sprawling shrub that shoots scores of long branchless stems into the air during the growing season. If grown in the open and left unpruned this beautiful shrub will form a symmetrical mound of foliage that is up to 15 ft (4.6 m) high and 20 ft (6.1 m) in diameter the ultimate size being dependent on variety and climate. The slender young stems are very pliable and very fast growing. These stems, or "canes" bend to form great arcs if unsupported. When grown adjacent to other plantings silverthorn canes insinuate themselves into the situation as they weave their way among the host's branches in an aggressive bid for sunlight. It can reach 60 ft (18.3 m) in height in its native range, but generally is much smaller, 3-10 ft (0.9-3.1 m) tall. in culture. The Bay laurel sometimes produces suckers from the base. The leaves are elliptic, 3-4 in (7.6-10.2 cm) long, rather thick and leathery, and shiny dark green. Clusters of small yellow flowers are produced in spring, followed, on the female plants, by shiny black or purple berries about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) long. There are several cultivars, including: 'Aurea', with yellowish young foliage; 'Angustifolia' (also called willow-leaf bay), with narrow lance-shaped leaves; and 'Undulata' with wavy leaf margins. This bay laurel has been clipped to a pyramid form and is the perfect small tree for patios in containers in climates where it is not hardy. The popular culinary seasoning, bay leaf, is used extensively in French, Italian, Spanish and Creole cooking. It flavors soups, stews, shellfish boils, pickling brines, sauces, marinades, and poultry and fish dishes. Always remove the bay leaves before serving, because they are sharp and can cut the mouth and throat. French chefs place bay leaves, parsley and thyme in a little bundle called a bouquet garni that is removed after cooking. Pick bay leaves early in the day and dry quickly under weight so they won't curl. Store in an air-tight jar. Click the image to read more!

Also known as Oriental arborvitae, this plant has been clipped to a half standard form and is perfect for display on the patio. Use Oriental arborvitae for formal hedges and as specimen shrubs. This is a neat shrub with tight, compact foliage held in dense, fanlike vertical sprays. Even mature specimens keep their dense foliage all the way to the ground, making oriental arborvitae a good choice for screens and windbreaks. They are used to anchor doors or foundation plantings (but plan for ultimate size!). The smaller cultivars are good in rock and succulent gardens. Oriental arborvitae is a good choice for chalky or alkaline soils that usually mean slow death for most cultivated plants. They do well on dry, rocky sites, and flourish even on crushed coral and sea shell "soils", although they are not very salt tolerant. Click the image to read more!
