Cherrys/ Pear

Compact tree with clusters of large, fragrant, semi-double pale pink blooms that smother the branches in late spring. This upright, columnar Japanese cherry is one of the best ornamental trees for a small garden. It will thrive in any soil but does need plenty of sunshine to flower well. This is the sweet cherry we have all grown to love in pies and other baked goods. Provide good drainage in an acidic soil for best growth. Select a different plant if soil is poorly drained, but otherwise cherry adapts to clay or loam. However, this plant is more tolerant of flooding than other members of the Prunus genus tested. Roots should be kept moist and should not be subjected to prolonged drought. Masses of long-lasting, double white blossom appear in mid-spring with the new leaves, followed by small reddish fruit. A very popular, vigorous, upright deciduous tree with stiff ascending branches which are covered with young coppery-red leaves in spring, turning green in summer. Masses of clusters of fully double purple-pink flowers 1.5-2ins (4-5cm) across appear before the leaves during the latter half of April. It's like having two landscape trees in one: Callery pear is a spectacularly showy tree in spring when it is covered with clusters of white flowers and again in fall when its leaves turn bright yellow, mahogany and red. This is a pear tree grown for its flowers and fall foliage, and not for an edible fruit. The deciduous leaves are oval, 2-3 in (5-7.6 cm) long, leathery and lustrous green, turning shades of yellow, orange, purple and red in fall. They persist on the tree into early winter after most deciduous trees have shed their leaves. The flowers are about 1 in (2.5 cm) across and arranged in clusters of a dozen or so, each cluster about 3 in (7.6 cm) across. They appear before and with the leaves in early spring, and completely cover the tree so that all you see is white. Most cultivars will reach 30-50 ft (9-15.2 m) in height. Willow-leaved pear is a small, oval-rounded, ornamental pear tree which typically reaches only 10-15' tall and features silvery, weeping foliage. Foliage emerges silver in spring but gradually turns silvery green as the growing season progresses. Weeping form provides excellent winter interest. Pink-tipped buds open to creamy white flowers in dense corymbs in early spring. Flowers are followed by small, greenish-yellow pears (to 1.5" long) which are of little ornamental significance or practical value. One of the finest of all Cherries, and probably the best of the 'whites', it bears its large, single flowers profusely, contrasting beautifully with its young, copper coloured foliage. Very good for urban plantings, streets, parks and gardens, but in our experience it does not thrive in very wet soils. It is of medium height and rounded habit. It is a very beautiful evergreen shrub, eventually making a large shapely tree if allowed to grow naturally. The leaves are an attractive shade of green, reddish when young and on red stalks, while the white flowers in early summer smell sweetly of hawthorn. It is hardier and more versatile even than cherry laurel, and withstands clipping into formal shapes so its really great as Topiary. The white, scented flowers appear in June in long slender racemes are followed by small red fruits which turn black in winter. A very good plant for a low windbreak.
