Trees for Christmas

Also known as Coral Tower or Coral Bark, this beautiful Japanese maple is understandably popular for its bright coral red bark in winter, pale yellow-green leaf in spring and apricot and gold leaf in the Autumn. Sango Kaku offers year round interest with the striking feature of this cultivar being the ever changing colours from spring through summer and Autumn. It is strong grower in youth. This is one of the most beautiful small trees for the ornamental landscape. It is perfectly suited as a specimen tree, an accent in a mixed border, or in a container on the patio. It anchors the Japanese style garden. Many of the cultivars remain quite small and are especially useful in small gardens, even rock gardens, and for bonsai. An evergreen shrub growing to 3m by 3m. It is in leaf all year, in flower in May, and the seeds ripen in October. The scented flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Flies and midges. It is noted for attracting wildlife. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay and nutritionally poor soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline soil. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. White flowers in spring, abundant, red persistent fruit in fall. Exceptionally clean foliage throughout the growing season. This tree tends to maintain a rounded growth habit, and most often grows a bit wider than it does tall, with a mature height of 18-22' and similar mature width. This tree flowers in early spring, and as pictured, buds begin as an almost crimson red, and as they open fade to pure white. The flowers give way to bright red fruit that are roughly 3/8" in diameter and persistent through the winter (providing some nice winter interest). Long a landscape favorite, mountain ash is an upright tree growing 25 - 40 feet high with a rounded open crown. In late spring it covers itself with clusters of delicate white flowers. The real show, however, starts in late summer when the flowers mature into spectacular clusters of bright orange-red berries. Dull green pinnately compound leaves are composed of 7 to 13 leaflets. This feathery foliage and flamboyant fruit give this beauty an almost tropical dazzle. While the leaves provide little colour in the fall, they turn reddish brown and quickly drop, the pea-sized berries persist in a display of colour that lasts into winter. A decidious tree growing to 15m by 7m at a medium rate. It is hardy and is not frost tender. It is in flower from May to June, and the seeds ripen from August to September. Elegant small deciduous tree with arching branches and graceful habit. Fern-like leaves turn orange and bronze-red in autumn. White flowers late spring followed by pendulous clusters of fruits ripening to rose-red in September, changing to pink then white flushed pink. Charming and suitable for smaller gardens. Very pretty feathery foliage of numerous olive-green leaflets cover this elegant tree and turn dark crimson in autumn. Creamy white flowers are followed by pendulous clusters of berries which fade from red to white as the season progresses. The strawberry tree is a beautiful small evergreen tree or shrub that can occasionally reach 9 metres tall and 8 metres wide, though it is usually rather smaller. There are several named forms and some of these are no more than 2 - 3 metres tall. The strawberry tree produces masses of beautiful white flowers in November and December. Since the fruit takes 12 months to ripen, the tree carries both mature fruit and flowers at the same time and is then incredibly beautiful. This is a superb plant to grow as a specimen in a lawn, and it also grows very well on the sunny edges of a woodland garden. Click the image to read more!

With its pyramidal shape, soft grayish-green (or blue) needles and drooping branches, this cedar makes a graceful specimen or accent tree. Growing rapidly to 40 to 50 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide, it also works well as a soft screen. The trunk stays fairly straight with lateral branches nearly horizontal and drooping. Lower branches should be left on the tree so the true form of the tree can show. Allow plenty of room for these to spread. The tree has been successfully used as a street or median planting with lower branches removed. It appears to tolerate compacted, poor soil but declines in areas where smog is a problem. It makes a striking evergreen specimen, with a distinct, graceful, weeping habit. Even one plant will soften any landscape. Use it near water or around a patio or as a lawn specimen in residential or commercial landscapes. This tree has outstanding ornamental features and could be planted more. The Nootka False Cypress is a graceful, weeping, pyramidal evergreen, and can reach 60 to 90 feet in the wild buy stays within a height of 35 feet and a spread of 20 feet in cultivation. The trunk remains straight and dominant throughout the life the tree. The long, pendulous, flattened branches are clothed with dark lush-green or grayish-green, scale like “needles”.
